October, 3rd, 2024. Written by Clara De Nadal Trias
Javier Nadal Pereña is a renowned doctor specialized in Assisted Reproduction and human sterility, born in Barcelona with more than 30 years of experience behind him and who has brought more than 10,000 healthy children into the world.
Those who know him describe him as a brave, special, happy person, fun, a good conversationalist, generous, passionate about travel and new experiences and above all, a lover of life and medicine.
When he is in front of you, he is one of those persons who transmits experience, serenity and self-confidence; both for his warm voice and close treatment, as well as for his intense gaze, or the elegant rhythm of how he moves his well-cared hands.
After studying medicine and graduating in gynecology and obstetrics at the Hospital de Sant Pau in Barcelona and after several stays at the GBMC Hospital (Great Baltimore Medical Center) in the US, he returned to Barcelona to be the co-founder of the first private In Vitro Fecundation center in Spain.
Years later, in 1999, he was named founder and Director of the Assisted Reproduction Unit of the Quirón Teknon Hospital, member of the Spanish Fertility Society and Coordinator of the Ethics and Good Praxis Group of the SEF.
Currently and for more than 30 years he is the founder and current Director of the medical center Centro Javier Nadal as well as expert in the innovative Uterine Fibroid Radiofrequency treatment.
Hello Doctor, it is a pleasure to be able to interview you. Please tell me more about your medical center, Centro Javier Nadal:
Centro Javier Nadal is a private medical institution dedicated to helping any couple or single woman who has any type of reproductive problem. Since its creation, our goal is to facilitate and help everyone who needs to achieve the dream of being parents. In addition to Assisted Reproduction, at Centro Javier Nadal we provide the most innovative treatments to improve the health and quality of life of women who suffer, for example, In Vitro fertilization, endometriosis, artificial insemination, ROPA method, among others, and we are also one of the few medical centers in Spain that are experts in treating uterine fibroids with radiofrequency, when indicated and studied.
Very interesting. Please tell us more about the innovative radiofrequency treatment for uterine fibroids.
Thanks to this revolutionary radiofrequency treatment, we can reduce and even eliminate the majority of uterine fibroids - by ultrasound and vaginally, without surgery or admission to the clinic, only with sedation and a brief rest in the day hospital. And all this considering that, currently, between 50 and 60% of all women in the world suffer from this symptomatology.
As a doctor, what do you think is your greatest contribution to a city like Barcelona?
My greatest contribution as a doctor has surely been participating in the achievement of the second test tube child in Barcelona and all of Spain. Furthermore, for more than 30 years I have specialized and offered solutions to thousands of women in assisted reproduction: in vitro fertilization, egg donation, artificial insemination, sperm bank, ROPA method (technique where a couple of two women can be mothers through the sperm bank); as well as specializing in radiofrequency in uterine fibroids to improve the lives of many women.
Furthermore, in Barcelona there is the well-known Quirón Teknon Hospital where, besides having my private medical center, Centro Javier Nadal , I have also been the doctor who founded its Assisted Reproduction Unit and directed it for 14 years.
And speaking of Barcelona, in your opinion, what is the best thing about living in the Catalan capital?
Its climate, interest in culture and its very high medical scientific level that has made Barcelona a world reference.
What is your favorite corner of the city?
Without a doubt the Gothic Quarter and the sea.
And your favorite restaurants?
My favorite restaurant is Restaurante Bonanova. But I also really like Vivanda with its magnificent terrace and its new Va de Cuina Gourmet takeaway space located in the Sarrià neighborhood.

If someone has never been to Barcelona, what can't you miss?
I would say stroll through the Gothic Quarter, come see the sea and, of course, visit Gaudí's three great architectural works: La Pedrera, Casa Batlló and the Sagrada Familia.
And if you have extra days, take the train or car and visit Sitges (a fishing town 30 minutes from Barcelona).
What is your favorite plan in the city?
Stroll through the Gothic Quarter and enjoy all the small local shops that surround it, have an aperitif at the legendary La Pineda delicatessen, continue the walk until you reach the Olympic port and then go to the Restaurante Carballeira, to eat an “arroz a banda” " delicious.
Restaurante Carballeira
If you didn't live in Barcelona, where would you live?
In Spain, in San Sebastián. Internationally, in Vancouver, Canada.
If Barcelona were a person, who would it be?
Ildefonso Cerdá, the engineer and urban planner who worked on the planning and distribution of the city blocks of Barcelona. Its main objectives, in addition to facilitating carriage traffic, was to clean up the metropolis, ensuring that the homes became lighter and with gardens for those who lived there.
Last but not least, please tell me someone I should do this interview to:
To my son, Javier De Nadal Trias, who is a fantastic architect from his own studio EstudioQBarcelona.
Thank you very much for your time Doctor Nadal, especially for everything you have done and continue to do for women. It has been an honor to interview you.
